China Publishing Group Leads a Delegation to the 75th Frankfurt Book Fair

The 75th Frankfurt Book Fair (Frankfurter Buchmesse) was held from October 18 to 22, 2023. China Publishing Group (CPG), alongside 16 affiliated publishers, including People’s Literature Publishing House, the Commercial Press, Zhonghua Book Company, Encyclopedia of China Publishing House, China Fine Arts Publishing Group, SDX Joint Publishing Company, Oriental Publishing Center, and China Democracy and Legal System Publishing House, as well as China National Publications Import & Export (Group) Co., Ltd. (CNPIEC), made a remarkable appearance at the event. The delegation, consisting of over 30 staff members, set up an impressive “China Publishing Group” pavilion in a prime location at the fair. Spanning 78 square meters, the exhibition space showcased nearly 500 high-quality books across thematic, social science, and literary categories.

During the fair, CNPIEC, a subsidiary of the CPG, co-organized the “Power of Thought” product launch event with China Global Television Network (CGTN). The event featured the bilingual release of Global Thinkers (Chinese and English Edition), compiling insights from globally renowned thinkers and political figures to interpret Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and discuss governance philosophy. Participating units under CPG showcased Chinese masterpieces as bridges for cross-cultural dialogue and promoted mutual learning between Chinese and foreign civilizations. They signed nearly 100 copyright export agreements and letters of intent, while organizing 12 diverse events.

China Publishing Group (CPG) organized a series of activities that became a standout Chinese presence at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Its subsidiary, People’s Literature Publishing House, hosted an overseas copyright promotion event for the comic series My Cat Hates Me. Attendees included the author Bai Cha, the translator of the French edition Laetitia Rapuzzi, and representatives from the Lebanese publishing group Digital Future. The English edition of the comic won the Gold Award in the Graphic Novel category at the 35th Annual IBPA (Independent Book Publishers Association) Benjamin Franklin Awards.

Encyclopedia of China Publishing House and Springer Nature Group jointly hosted the “China Encyclopedia, Global Sharing” cooperation achievements release event, alongside the signing ceremony for the English edition of the Encyclopedia of China (Third Edition)—Psychology. During the event, a copyright cooperation agreement was also signed with Cengage Group and China Intercontinental Press for The Tolskys. Additionally, the English edition of the Encyclopedia of China (Third Edition)—Mining and Metallurgical Engineering has been officially launched on Springer Nature’s Springer Link platform.

SDX Joint Publishing Company hosted a promotion event for the foreign-language editions of “Chen Shengqian’s Archaeology Series”. Myriam Poort, VP Humanities Publishing at Springer, praised the series and its translated editions for their academic rigor and readability, highlighting the practical and social significance of publishing Chen’s works from the perspective of international publishers.

Oriental Publishing Center hosted a new book promotion event for the English and Japanese editions of The Theory of Contemporary Chinese Civilization as well as the English edition of Creating the Organization of the Future: Building on Drucker and Confucius Foundations, which were published by Prunus Press USA, the Kitakyushu China Bookstore, and Emerald Publishing, respectively.

CNPIEC, a subsidiary of China Publishing Group, organized China’s presence at the fair, bringing together over 120 participants from more than 60 publishing houses for the China pavilion and the Chinese delegation. It also hosted a series of publishing exchange activities. The China Writers Association and CNPIEC co-hosted the Launch Ceremony of the Sailing Project: Chinese Literature World Tour – Literature Summit Plan for a New Era and the Chinese Writers Gala. The occasion facilitated copyright cooperation for six works originally published by People’s Literature Publishing House, including the German edition of The Shot and the Turkish edition of Holy Matrimony, as well as letters of intent on seven international publishing projects. CNPIEC also signed a global cooperation agreement with Taylor & Francis and Ingram Content Group to jointly promote the publication of Chinese authors’ works in international journals and the global dissemination of Chinese books. Additionally, it co-organized events such as the “Reading China: International Exchanges on Beijing Literature” with the Beijing Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the Confucius Institute at the Free University of Berlin.

Li Jingze, Vice Chairman of the China Writers Association; Wu Ken, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Germany; Feng Shixin, Director-General of the Publishing Bureau, Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee; Huang Yiyang, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Frankfurt; and Zhang Jichen, Vice President of China Publishing & Media Co., Ltd., were invited to attend the events, deliver speeches, and serve as witnesses.
