Introduction

Civilization, a manifestation of the human spirit, embodies both intricate structures and a unifying essence. Grasping its entirety can be a formidable challenge. The ongoing dialogue between China’s civilization and others around the world extends beyond cultural exchange; it encompasses material and spiritual interactions across diverse domains. The Civilization of China and Civilizations for the World is the second installment in the “Civilization Dialogue” series after Our View of Civilization. Dialogue between civilizations is both a conceptual framework and a cherished ideal. Through sustained efforts to nurture this dialogue and by gleaning insights from past experiences, we can foster a progression in communication between different civilizations, moving from a spontaneous level to a more comprehensive and self-aware level that involves a deeper spiritual engagement. This series aims to promote Chinese culture on a global stage and comprises four sections: examining the human spirit through a civilizational lens, exploring how China is perceived by others, investigating the mutual learning between cultures, and offering diverse perspectives on contemporary civilizational challenges. Guided by a vision of peaceful and sustainable development, where economic growth harmonizes with ecological imperatives and the well-being of all, contemporary China actively engages in economic, trade, and cultural exchanges with other countries and regions. Through respectful interactions and shared learning, it contributes to building a richer global civilization for the present and future.
