This book tells the evolution and development of the cultural implications of Chinese color “qing”, or cyan, and analyzes the inclusive characteristics of the Chinese nation and dominant philosophical thoughts of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism reflected by this particular color. It showcases the broad aesthetic dimension of “qing”, ranging from simplicity to grandeur, and the rich visual experiences from lightness to calmness that the color “qing” provides. By examining the semantic changes of words containing the character “qing”, as well as changes of the color in utensils, artifacts and costumes, the author puts forward the viewpoint that “qing is the color code to decrypt Chinese traditional culture, and the symbolic color of Chinese culture”.
