The Caojiadu Fairy Tale presents six stories all set in Shanghai's Caojiadu district - the birthplace of author Cai Jun. Infused with personal memories of growing up, these tales read like adult fairy tales that belong to every grown-up who was once a child. They resemble a series of old photographs glowing with peculiar light, preserving Shanghai's bygone days at the end of the 20th century, particularly focusing on the social atmosphere of western Shanghai between 1988 and 1992 - Wujiaochang, Sanguantang, the farmers' market behind Zhongshan Park's back gate, the West Shanghai Cinema with its hand-painted posters, whispered secrets in the old alleyways, the shimmering surface and muddy depths of Suzhou Creek, along with adolescent adventures and fantasies. Cai Jun dives into this museum of memories and, with abundant creative energy, unleashes his imagination to reconstruct time and space, creating the vibrant, uniquely meaningful "Caojiadu Universe" that blurs the line between reality and fantasy.
