From Guizhou to Rovaniemi was written by Guizhou writer Shan Feng, who poured five years into its creation. The story unfolds across two distinct locations: Guizhou, China, and Rovaniemi, Finland. The book is divided into two parts. Part one is told from the perspective of Zhen Shui, a reclusive playwright living in Libo, Guizhou. His life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Xi Su, a troubled teenager of Shanghai. Zhen Shui encouraged Xi Su to return to school and pursue further education in Finland. Meanwhile, Zhen Shui ultimately found solace in Buddhism himself, inspired by Xi Su’s story. This part also delves into Guizhou's unique customs and offers glimpses into the Finnish national character. Part two follows Qian He and Wan Hai's present-day romance, alongside the love stories of their fathers and grandfathers.
Shan Feng's masterful storytelling skills shine throughout the novel. The combination of a cleverly conceived plot packed with surprising twists and turns and an elegant and refined writing style keep readers engaged. Exquisite pictures complement the text, showcasing the rich social and cultural landscapes of Guizhou and Rovaniemi.
