Introduction

New farmers, a newly emerged group in China, refer to those who choose to devote themselves to agriculture after having studied, worked or lived in cities. They are very different from the farmers in the traditional sense in terms of birth, ability, experience, philosophy and pursuit. In the current era of dramatic changes in technology, market and business environment, rural revitalization needs to be infused with fresh blood of new farmers to develop a vibrant new countryside.

This book brings together 24 new farmers and presents their real experiences of returning to their hometowns to start businesses and remodel farmland with pictures and text. There are not only successful cases of ecological agriculture and community supported agriculture innovation, but also a summary of failures in practice. There are not only subtle observation of agricultural development in other countries, but also real experience of the current construction of China’s new countryside. This book is divided into three chapters of “Home is where the heart is”, “The road ahead will be long and our climb will be steep”, and “Stones from other hills may serve to polish the jade of this one”. It describes the thoughts and feelings of the new farmers in the process of returning to the countryside and starting businesses, and the living stories of the new countryside construction under the rural revitalization strategy with rich details and genuine feeling.

Combined with practical cases, this book also discusses the philosophy of ecological agriculture, the marketing model of agricultural products, the community supported agriculture, and other important propositions. It has important reference value for the construction of new countryside, the innovative development of agricultural industries and the construction of agricultural socialized service system.
