Introduction

This book contains 67 well-known short stories about President Xi Jinping’s thoughts and practices of poverty alleviation. These stories are arranged in chronological order, spanning half a century from 1969 to 2019. They cover almost all the places that President Xi has served for across his political career, starting from Liangjiahe village in Shaanxi Province to Zhengding city in Hebei Province, to Fujian Province, Zhejiang Province, and finally to China’s central government. In addition, the stories recorded every aspect of President Xi’s interactions with the people in need and his practice of leading them out of poverty, including learning about the hardships in the countryside for the first time at the age of 15 when he went to live and work in Liangjiahe village and visiting all concentrated contiguous destitute areas in China.
