Introduction

Right Way Forward: My 26 Years in Yum!Brands is J. Samuel (Sam) Su’s first work on management. Mr. Su, former Chairman and CEO of the China Division for Yum!Brands, Inc., joined KFC and was appointed as Acting General Manager for China in 1989, when China KFC had only four restaurants. In the following 26 years, he remained as the pilot of Yum!Brands’ business in China. His work includes organizing the Chinese team, expanding KFC, introducing Pizza Hut, creating the Chinese cuisine brand East Dawning, and acquiring Little Sheep, then China’s most popular hot pot brand, bringing the China Division, a mere regional division, to a significant position in Yum!’s global network. When Mr. Su retired in 2015, restaurants of KFC in China had exceeded 5,000 and Pizza Hut 2,000. He is recognized as the “father of China’s fast food” in the industry. During his 26 years in Yum China, Mr. Su and the company have, on the one hand, witnessed the great opportunities brought about by China’s reform and opening-up and enjoyed various benefits by keeping pace with the times; while on the other hand, faced with all kinds of challenges just as other transnational enterprises. He has both created numerous “legends” in the industry and left behind many “pities” worthy of retrospection and consideration. The book is the first collection of his management philosophies, in which Mr. Su also reflects on and shares for the first time his experience in creating East Dawning and acquiring Little Sheep. His sharing of the two widely controversial cases is informative.
