Introduction

Ma Xinle is mainly engaged in professional painting creation and appraisal of calligraphy and painting. His works are mainly Chinese paintings on figures, flowers, birds, and horses. He is skilled in brushwork, sketching and oil painting. He pursues poetic and picturesque expression in the works with natural strokes, showing the blending of the east and west.

Grandeur of the Great Tang is a paper fine brushwork with two volumes. Volume I is 96 centimeters high and 26 meters long; volume II is 96 centimeters high and 37 meters long. The total length exceeds 60 meters. The painting took ten years and was completed in the summer of 2020. The work depicts the landscape of the Tang Dynasty under valid historical records, showing the prosperity of Chang’an City, the capital of the Tang Dynasty, with stable political situation, developed economy, smooth trade and cultural development. The artist painted more than 1530 people, including intellectuals, officials, farmers, businessmen, dignitaries, ladies and buskers, from the bird’s eye view and cavalier perspective. The characters in the painting were vividly portrayed both in clothes and manner, their cultural and recreational activities shown in the painting also reflect the lives of different classes of that time. The whole painting is rich in contents and details, vividly reliving the glory of the Tang Dynasty. Every stroke is rigorous and meticulous, vivid and flexible, setting in rich and elegant colors, feeling simple and warm. The magnificent layout of the whole painting is properly ordered either intricately or simply, all of which have made it worthy of being handed down as a masterpiece of contemporary classical fine brushwork figure painting.
