Introduction
This book is written in the style of narrative history by event (jishi benmo style) and focuses on the history of ancient Chinese calligraphy. It breaks away from the traditional approach of organizing calligraphy history by chronological order or dynasty, which often leads to a fragmented narrative. Instead, it offers a more integrated perspective on calligraphy art. The book is divided into six topics, providing a detailed interpretation of the origins, development and transformation of the five major styles of traditional Chinese calligraphy—seal script, clerical script, cursive script, running script, and regular script—as well as the art of seal carving. Through the introduction and commentary on representative calligraphers and their works, the book deepens readers’ understanding of the beauty of Chinese calligraphy. It also offers constructive suggestions on the practice of copying various scripts, covering aspects such as the selection of brushes, ink, paper, and copybooks, as well as important considerations for copying techniques.
