The novel is framed by the college entrance examination substitution incident and narrates the intertwined first half of the lives of two women born in 1984. In the process, the changes of the times from 1980 to 2020 are also reflected. The two protagonists spent a magical and innocent childhood and a crisis-ridden adolescence in an inland small town and grew into completely different girls. After the college entrance examination, one of them replaced the other, went to a big city to attend university, pursue postgraduate studies, enter a public institution, marry a university professor with a domestic violence habit, and become a person who “seems to have everything”; the replaced one became a wine salesgirl and a factory worker, and finally opened a small shop and struggled hard at the bottom of society. After the substitution incident was exposed, the substitute lost her job and family and experienced an ohnosecond. Finally, she fled to Japan and lived a lonely but real life in her own name. The replaced one regained her name at the age of 33, returned to the right track of life, entered university, pursued the lost dream, met love and gave birth to a daughter.
