Introduction
The Tinker is adapted from the novel The Celadon Dish written by renowned author Wang Yongying. The story follows a young boy who accidentally breaks his grandmother’s cherished celadon dish, plunging her into sorrow. When a tinker arrives in the village to repair the dish, he shares with the boy tales of his grandfather and reveals his grandmother’s deepest wishes. However, the tinker claims the dish remains imperfect and vows to return the following year to finish the restoration—a deliberate arrangement made with the boy’s father. This benevolent deception gives the grandmother something to look forward to and provides the tinker a reason to mend the dish again. As he departs, his fading shout lingers alongside the mended celadon, its cracks preserved like promises awaiting the next year’s reunion.
