Introduction
On the century-long journey of national rejuvenation, Chinese scientists have collectively kept the motherland in their hearts, selflessly dedicating themselves to the advancement of science and technology, the improvement of people’s livelihoods, and the development of the nation. They embody the collective wisdom and cohesion of the Chinese nation—this is the source for rejuvenating and strengthening the country. The series “A Century of Science: Forging a Monument Together” is planned against this backdrop, serving as a high-quality set of educational picture books on the theme of science, suitable for children aged 3 to 8. Testimony is the first volume in this series and the first picture book themed on the “Spirit of Moving West.” “The phoenix perches on the parasol tree” is a cherished aspiration of the Chinese nation. In 1956, thousands of faculty and students from Jiaotong University heeded the call, relocating with the university from Shanghai to Xi’an. The Yu family, filled with the ambition to serve their country, boarded the westward-bound train. At the same time, thousands of young parasol tree saplings were transported to the new campus in Xi’an, taking root alongside Professor Yu and other builders in this campus brimming with hope and yet to be fully developed. This picture book, from the perspective of the parasol trees on the Jiaotong University campus, witnesses the scientific research careers of Professor Yu and his son Xisheng, reflecting the patriotic sentiments and scientific ambitions of generations of “Jiaotong University people.”
