Introduction
The Along the River During the Qingming Festival is a silk painting, created with light ink and colors, measuring 24.8 cm in height and 528.7 cm in width. It is a masterpiece depicting the urban landscape of Bianliang (today's Kaifeng, Henan), the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty. It is a rare treasure in the history of Chinese painting, a gem of artistic creation. Using realism and a panoramic composition, it vividly and meticulously portrays the bustling scene of boats moving back and forth, flying rainbows over waves, crowded shops, and dense populations, showcasing the rich social life and customs of the time. Created by the Northern Song painter Zhang Zeduan, it is one of the few surviving masterpieces and a national treasure currently housed in the Palace Museum in Beijing. The work is presented in a long scroll format, employing a scattered perspective technique, vividly documenting the urban landscape of the Northern Song capital Dongjing (also known as Bianjing, today's Kaifeng) in the 12th century and the living conditions of people from various social classes at the time. It serves as a testament to the prosperity of Bianjing during the Northern Song period and reflects the economic conditions of the urban area.
