Introduction
The zaju of the Yuan Dynasty Xixiangji is a classic of traditional Chinese opera, of which the characters Cui Yingying, Zhang Sheng, and Hongniang are also classic figures in Chinese people’s minds. Historically, scholarly interpretations of Xixiangji have tended to focus on textual analysis or literary criticism. However, the author of this book, Mr. Huang Tianji believes that Xixiangji, as it has been passed down to the present day, is not only a literary work, but also a theatrical script, which is to be performed on the stage. Therefore, in addition to the literary vision, the dramatic vision is needed to highlight the uniqueness of Xixiangji as a theatrical script rather than a work of poetry or fiction. Therefore, in this book, Mr. Huang Tianji uses his attainments in poetic composition to facilitate his sympathetic understanding of the literary creation of the ancients. In addition to textual analysis, with his incisive insights, broad knowledge, and good judgment, Huang explores the emotional details within the structure and under the theme of Xixiangji. Therefore, this book illustrates both the literary and theatrical significance of Xixiangji.
