The zaju of the Yuan Dynasty Xixiangji is a classic of traditional Chinese opera, of which the characters Cui Yingying, Zhang Sheng, and Hongniang are also classic figures in Chinese people’s minds. Historically, scholarly interpretations of Xixiangji have tended to focus on textual analysis or literary criticism.
