Introduction
Chinese Faces: The Ethnic Gaze and Memory in Cultural Artifacts is the inaugural work of the “Interpreting the Symbols of Chinese Civilization” series. It takes Chinese faces depicted on cultural relics from collections worldwide as the carrier to tell the cultural tapestry of Chinese civilization spanning ten millennia, and is dedicated to helping readers understand the “great civilization” through the lens of these “small faces”. The book selects 50 most representative cultural relics that showcase “Chinese faces”, ranging from the faces of 200-millennium-year-old “Peking Man”, to the contemplative figures of the Bronze Age, from the frontier soldiers in Qin and Han Dynasties to the pioneers of the Silk Road and the guardians of maritime peace. Through high-definition images and rigorous research, this book reveals the emotions, wisdom, and values of the Chinese nation behind these artifacts. The book is divided into three chapters, namely, “Great Unity across the Nation”, “Shared Customs Under Heaven”, and “Four Seas, One Family”, which progressively demonstrate the continuity, innovation, unity, inclusiveness, and peacefulness of Chinese civilization. Each face is not only a gaze into history, but also a cultural memory. From the mysterious smile of the Hongshan Goddess, the profound gaze of the Sanxingdui bronze figures to the wit and vividness of pottery storyteller, and the grandeur of Zheng He’s Voyages to the “Western Ocean”, together, they construct the cultural identity of Chinese civilization, presenting a true image of China as a country worthy of friendship, trust, and respect to the world.
