Introduction
This book is based on the excavation, inheritance, and promotion of intangible cultural heritage, and is guided by the contents of President Xi Jinping’s speeches, including “letting the history and the cultural relics speak for themselves”, “carrying forward our traditional culture in accordance with the conditions of the new era”, and “promoting the creative transformation and development of traditional Chinese culture”. It explores the development of dance movements by drawing upon the dance images found in ancient relics—from prehistoric rock paintings to the representative dance figures throughout the history of ancient China. The book also integrates the basic movement forms and characteristic body elements of traditional dance. Through these, it creates a historically grounded movement resource system for traditional Chinese dance. This book represents an important research initiative of the Beijing Dance Academy, which a pioneering research project in China. The research team, with 17 years of efforts, has transformed static dance heritage—originally preserved texts and artworks—into dynamic visual representations, bringing dance relics to life within the scope of historical research. It practices the concept of developing cultural products with Chinese characteristics, style, and vision, making history observable, culture tangible, inheritance visible, and innovation feasible, thus achieving the sustainable development of dance cultural heritage. This work not only fills a gap in the field but also holds practical value. It can promote digital choreography and cultural tourism, stimulating the public’s enthusiasm about cultural innovation. The book is richly illustrated, containing approximately 5,800 dynamic movement images, along with over 130 dance videos accessible via QR codes.
