The Grand Master is written to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Zhao Songting, a revered figure in Chinese Dizi (“bamboo flute”) art. Dedicated sixty years to the art of the Dizi, Zhao Songting is widely recognized as a leading representative of the Southern style of Dizi playing. He pioneered the Zhejiang school featuring “balance of strength and softness, integration of North and South”. While making remarkable achievements in the fields of Dizi performance, composition, teaching, writing, and research, he had also made significant contributions to the popularization, enhancement, and development of Chinese ethnic music. The second part traces the legacy of Zhao’s Dizi music style, featuring not only his representative works but also the works of his early direct disciples.
