Introduction
Teahouse is adapted from the eponymous play written by modern Chinese writer Lao She in 1956. The Yutai Teahouse becomes a stage that performs three acts in turbulent changes over nearly half a century: the failures of the Hundred Days’ Reform, the warlord chaos, and the reign of Kuomintang. Through vividly drawn characters, it exposes the darkness and corruption of old Chinese society, full of bizarre and chaotic elements, encapsulating the sharp contradictions across social classes at the time and implicitly revealing the inevitable direction of China’s fate.
