4 GEN: A Family in Wartime is adapted from Lao She’s eponymous literary work. Set against the backdrop of Japanese-occupied Beijing during the War of Resistance to Japan, this picture-story series portrays the psychological struggles and experiences of the city’s residents from the July 7th Incident (Lugou Bridge Incident) in 1937 to Japan’s unconditional surrender in 1945. By depicting their rise and fall, honor and disgrace, life and death, and immense suffering, the volume reconstructs how people in Beijing transitioned from fear and despair to awakening and resistance under the brutal rule of Japanese invaders. The series celebrates the invaluable national spirit, indomitable will to fight, and unwavering determination of the Chinese people during the war.
