Memorial to Yueyang Tower was written by the Northern Song scholar Fan Zhongyan at the invitation of his friend for the renovation of Yueyang Tower. Through describing the scenery of the tower, the essay reveals the ancient virtue of “not pleased by external gains, nor saddened by personal losses,” while also expressing his patriotism and deep concern for the people with the sentiment, “Worry before the people fear something will happen, and be happy after the people are happy.” This book uses poetic painting and elegant prose to recreate the imagery contained in the essay, achieving a harmonious unity of poetry and painting.
