This book brings together ten papers on single whip reform written by Mr. Liang Fangzhong, published over a thirty-year period from 1936 to 1966. These papers cover various aspects of the Single Whip Law, including its nomenclature, content, implementation process, and the debates surrounding it at the time, making them classic works in the study of the Single Whip Law. Drawing upon abundant primary sources including the Ming Shilu (Ming Veritable Records), Tianxia Jun Guo Li Bing Shu (The Book of Benefits and Ills of the Empire’s Local Administration), as well as numerous Ming and Qing local chronicles, codes of laws and regulations, memorials to the throne, literary collections, and personal notes, and through careful analysis, the author conducted an in-depth study of the Single Whip Law, revealing its significant role in Chinese history.
