Introduction
Hellenistic civilization, emerging after the conquests of Alexander the Great, constituted a distinct new civilization formed through the collision, exchange, and integration of classical Greek civilization with Egyptian, Babylonian, and Indian civilizations. The Silk Road, established after ambassador Zhang Qian’s mission to the Western Regions during the Han Dynasty, served as a vital conduit facilitating communication between Eastern and Western civilizations. Through the Silk Road, Chinese civilization engaged directly with the civilizations of the Western Regions, particularly those influenced by Hellenistic civilization, leading to the gradual absorption of Hellenistic elements into China's own cultural tradition.
This six-volume scholarly work, collaboratively authored by over thirty experts from both China and abroad, follows the basic writing approach of “civilization exchange — interaction” and aims to examine the historical and logical connections between Chinese and Hellenic civilizations within the broader context of “ancient civilization exchange and interaction.”
