Introduction
This book is one of the outcomes of the National Social Science Fund’s major project “Survey and Digital Preservation of Chinese Religious Art Heritage.” It adopts both macro and micro perspectives to study Buddhist art heritage, combining general overviews and specialized analysis. Through anthropological fieldwork, the author visited numerous Buddhist art sites, from Taiwan and Guangdong in the east to Ngari, Tibet in the west, from Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang in the north to Yunnan and Sichuan in the south. The journey also extended to South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Europe and America to trace imprints of Buddhist art. Along the way, the author consulted with senior monks, novice monks, Buddhist scholars, and ordinary people, exploring how Buddhist art classics are interpreted by “insiders” in different contexts and the role Buddhist art plays in everyday life.
The book contains extensive fieldwork records and beautiful photographs taken by the author during these visits. The full-color images add both professionalism and readability to the book.
