Mounting and restoration of paintings and calligraphy works

Mounting is a unique traditional craft used in China to protect and embellish paintings and calligraphy works. The mounting craft of Rong Bao Zhai is the chief representative of the northern-style mounting craft, also known as Beijing-style mounting craft. This style was developed from the Xuanhe-style by incorporating advantages of other mounting styles from all over China. Rong Bao Zhai selects the materials for the mounting very carefully and does the work with traditional skills. The mounting of Rong Bao Zhai has its own style. For instance, it has been refining on the craft and technique. And the craftsmen perform in strict accordance with authorized procedures. Besides, the craftsmen constantly bring forth new ideas in the style and skills of mounting. Moreover, Rong Bao Zhai always considers the needs and preferences of customers. The artworks mounted by Rong Bao Zhai seem tasteful with spotless surface and high flexibility. The giant works mounted by Rong Bao Zhai appeared in Zhongnanhai, the Great Hall of the People, Tiananmen Square, CPPCC Hall and Diaoyutai State Guest House. Rong Bao Zhai’s restoration craft of ancient paintings and calligraphy works stands apart from every other in China. It has saved a number of heavily damaged artworks. In 1974 the sutra scriptures of Liao Dynasty was found in a Buddhist pagoda in Yingxian, Shanxi Province. These scriptures were damaged heavily in damp conditions. However, the craftsmen of Rong Bao Zhai fully restored the scriptures and the restoration craft of Rong Bao Zhai thus created a stir in the field. Since 1978 Rong Bao Zhai has restored hundreds of artworks, e.g. Giant Buddha Portrait on silk in National Museum of Federal Republic of Germany, This land is so rich in beauty in the Great Hall of the People, Plum blossom in vase by Chen Hongshou and other works by Ma Yuan, Wu Zhen, Dong Qichang, Lan Ying, Wen Zhengming, Badashanren, Yuan Jiang, Yuan Yao.






In 2008, Rong Bao Zhai’s mounting and restoration craft of paintings and calligraphy works was put on the list of national intangible cultural heritage.
